Industrial Chemical Sector Agreement

The unions accepted the limits of what could be achieved in the negotiations, but they put the commitment first on job stability and changes that would put an end to the precariousness of work. The new agreement recommends that local collective agreements focus on permanent jobs and the elimination of temporary work. Equal opportunities for women and young people must also be a priority. These issues will be the subject of ongoing negotiations within the newly created monitoring committee during the duration of the agreement. Factors such as the redistribution of work, reduced working hours and a part-time work programme as well as replacement contracts are considered important instruments to avoid redundancies. The wage policy for the next three years was agreed by trade union and employers` organisations, resulting in a 2.5% wage increase over the three years of the agreement. THE Spanish subsidiaries of ICEM in the chemical industry have agreed on an extension of the collective agreement of the sector. The previous agreement expired in December 2009. The agreement was signed on 9 February by ICEM FITEQA-CC partners. Oo. and FIA-UGT, was described by Lezcano, CC.OO`s head of communications, as a model that others must follow to overcome the financial crisis. The agreement is applicable for a three-year period, from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2012. The economic and financial crisis has resulted in the loss of 1.5 million jobs in Spain over the past 18 months, making negotiations between companies and trade unions even more important.

For the seventh consecutive quarter, Spain is in recession and, for the first time in Spain`s history, unemployment stands at 4 million.
